If the mill is a Gorton taper, but has with it a larger collet, all might not be lost. You could probably find an ER chuck with a straight shank. But the machine would have to come with the Gorton collet—-it would probably take years to find one otherwise. Gortons are awesome mills, but the 0-16 has a pretty small work envelope.
Today was hauling day and the Gorton 9J 3700 pound vertical mill is sitting in my driveway. Unloading was somewhat interesting but uneventful thankfully. There are several things to fix and lots of cleaning to do so will be busy with this for a while. The serial number is in the 191 range so I am thinking it is a war vintage machine.
Hi guys, I recently joined this forum and can already tell that a lot of knowledgable people post on here. I recently purchased an old Gorton 9-J mill. The machine seems to be in good condition with only one problem -- a very stiff spindle. It is tight going up and down, but rotates...
1952 - The company leases a former (WW II) Hemp mill in Union Grove; the building will house "Department 50", employing 50-60 people, and produce milling machines. Gorton's Fried and Frozen Codfish, the first modern convenience frozen seafood, was introduced in 1952 and became a huge hit with housewives.
I have a similar Gorton. 1) Get a box of the little pins that are the shear key for the power feed (its something like a 1/8 roll pin), and the right punch to knock them out and keep them handy. The joint in question is on the left side near the column. Will do. 2) I dont see the trip dogs for the cross feed.
First, not all 2-30 Gorton mills are tracers or have ball screws. I have a 2-30 in our production area and it is not a tracer (never was) and does not have ball screws. The good is that the machine is 5 HP and solid, it has feeds in all directions run by a DC motor, mine has power knee elevation. It is a variable speed with a power draw bar and ...
I have run into a Gorton J9 vertical mill. Not sure if I am serious about it or not. Have not seen it yet. Does anyone have one? How much space do they take up (overall dimensions)? How large is the table? Was told it takes a #40 taper. Is this eay to come up with? When was Gorton making...
Hi everyone. I recently decided my old mill drill wasn't good enough and I stepped up and acquired a real mill. I located. Gorton 1-22 Mastermil. Just moved it into the shop last week and I'm still cleaning it up. If anyone is interested in the machine's history, or the saga of its acquisition let me know. It's pretty funny.
They are a nice sweet mill. Mike Gorton from the Gorton web site may be able to tell you when they started putting a No. 40 taper in them, it would have to be in the late 60's. If they ever did in the 9-J's. Quick Navigation Antique Machinery and History Top. Site Areas; Settings; Private Messages; Subscriptions; Who's Online;
Gorton Mill was one of these early steam mills, located to make use of its canal-side location. It went into production in 1825 and expanded into the 1830s, employing 711 people, including over 300 children in 1832. It expanded still further in the later 19 th C (Cattell, 2019). The mill was acquired in 1844 by another famous Mancunian, John ...
You will need to run a drill chuck in a collet. New collets would probably be hard to find. Speed changes are done by loosening the motor clamp and running the motor in and shifting the belt to the desired groove. You can run it with the belt (on the motor) and at a different level on spindle to get the desired speed.
Josh, I hope you have found some leads at a Gorton site or at places which scrap machines and sell assemblies. The other ways require some search and fit. I did some searching and it depends on the parts available at any one time. First; realize that swivel or universal tables aren't generally part of a vertical mill.
A freind of mine has just replace his Gorton 1-22 mill with a new CNC mill, and has offered to sell me the Gorton at what I consider to be a fair price. This is not a pantograph machine as some are that bear this model number. The machine will come with some tooling including a handfull of collets, vice, boring head, drill chuck, manuals, and ...
I am looking for a good home for this P1-2 Gorton pantograph, serial #42115. It's a nice machine but now that I have a CNC mill it's not earning its keep. Supposedly this came out of a local company that made aircraft instrument panels. Includes: 2 nice complete font sets, one serif and one sans-serif. Clamps for the font table. 2 …
66. I have a Gorton O-16A mill with the universal milling head and the spindle is for the Gorton proprietary collet - 1/2 inch max bore. The universal head tilts side to side, nods front and back. and traverses in and out. There may be spindle differences in the two different types of heads used on the O-16 mills.
Greetings, I have just acquired a Gorton 9J mill and was wondering what those of you who have them or similar were using for lubricants? I think I have substitutes for everything but the gargoyle grease BRB No. 2. Thank you, Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk . 4GSR Diamond. Joined Jan 25, 2005 Location Victoria, Texas, USA.
I just bought a newer gorton mill and i paid roughly $1000. mines in cleaner shape and a little newer( 50-60s). i think 4 gsr is correct on the price since he knows them better. heres a suggestion for moving it. get the base measurements and build a cart like i did. im a fabricator so this was pretty easy for me. i dont know where your from but i cold …
My Gorton 9J mill has the long handfeed only table and power downfeed. This combination is what was recommended by Gorton when using these great mills as jig borers. Gorton offered a B&S end measuring rod system which allows location to be accurate within .0001-2 for jig boring. This was the same equipment supplied to P&W for …

The top of the mill is approximately 24 inches long x 9 inches wide on the machined surface. The distance from the front of the machined surface to the vertical plane of the furthest travel in the X is 3 feet! So the over arm needs to be atleast 5 feet long and 9 inches wide in order to be, maximally effective.
Prior to the 1950's, the three common vertical mill models were the 8-D, the 8 1/2-D, and the 9-J. The 8-D was rather small, and quickly superceded by the 8 1/2-D, and the larger 9-J. Starting in the 1940s, some (somewhat custom??) horizontal mills were added, and in the 1950's, the 'Mastermil' series was created.
The Gorton mill I have 1-22 is similar to The Bridgeport type mill probably more like the Series 2. Adding a counter weight will not be easy! I'm trying to repair the broken spring since all that was broken was the attachment on both ends, odd that it broke in 2 places but if I manage to get the tab bent that fits into the slot cut into the ...

The Gorton Mills site was subsequently acquired and significantly expanded into a fully integrated textile processing operation by John Rylands (1801-1888), the entrepreneur and philanthropist who would go on to become Manchester's first multi-millionaire. The renamed Rylands Mill was the first site he owned in his own right, …
In the meantime; 1. I was hoping to run down the O.E.M specs, year built, and model# of machine via serial #, no joy on internet. It has an original nameplate, Serial # 41183, 3 ph, 3 Hp, 60 Hz. It looks like it is a manually controlled spindle speed, 0- 5600 rpm, per seller. Comes w/ six 9B Hardinge collets.
The mill had plenty of capacity for the type of work we were doing. I liked the table handwheel that came out at a angle to the right side of the table, sure made it nice moving the table in the x direction, sure miss not having that on my Index mill. The Gortons are a heavy mill, weighing in at around 3400 lbs. 1000 lbs more than a BP!
