1980 JD 346 Wire Tie Baler Maintenance. I am in the process of putting new billhooks and the billhook shafts on the baler. I've done the billhooks before and they were easy but never have tried to replace the shafts. It looks like the shaft is held by a roll pin that is attached to the gear drive. I've run through my operator's manual but no joy.

Remove the twine holder spring. Remove the pin from the twine disc gear and remove the gear. The twine disc and cleaner discs can be removed. Install the new disc and pin. The twine disc will probably need to be re-timed. To time the twine disc, loosen the nut at the end of the twine disc worm gear. Take a hammer and tap on the end of the …

May need to adjust the twine disk tension, which is difficult on a 346. There are two "ice cream spoons" springs that are adjusted via bolt. Only turn bolt one flat at a time.

The only time I had issues was when the chaff built up around the knotters. I started carrying a leaf blower into the field with me, and would blow it out every 200 or so bales.

Run a few bales and see what happens. Check the wipper arm and see if its travel is the same as the side that works correctly.

Trip the knotter again and slowly roll the flywheel until the needles lift, the tucker fingers sweep by the needles and now watch the billhooks turn. At this stage, you need to turn the flywheel VERY slowly, and watch the billhook jaws open (to catch the two twines in the twine disk) and then turn some more to close, Then the wiper arms swing ...
I am haveing a problem with the twine hanging up on the billhook. It is knoting, but the billhook will not let go of the knot. It is only doing it on the flywheel side, sometimes both, but usually the flywheel side. On occasion it does get the urge to let go of the knot, 1 out of 20 bales. It took me 3 hours to bale 40 bales.

In my area (NE Kansas) any decent baler in working condition seems to start at $1500 and go up from there. You might see a an old IH 45 or 46 (maybe an old JD 14T) go for $500-$700 that "worked the last time they used it" but working New Holland 68s, 69s and newer along with John 214s, 224s and newer start at the $1500 mark and higher.
We have a 336 and a 348 and there is no comparison between the two... the 348 is much faster due to it's faster strokes per minute, but the 336 is a good realiable, backup baler. So, to answer your question... a 337 because of the wider pickup head. NH TS90, NH BC5070 w/ 72 thrower, JD 348 w/ 40 thrower, Ford TW-10, NH 1412, Ford …
1046 posts · Joined 2010. #1 · Jul 19, 2013. After missing too many ties this summer, I have decided it's time to overhaul the right side knotter in the 336. It's the older style with the wiper arm that is a single piece that you have to bend to get the proper contact with the billhook (I have a newer style on the left side).
Loosen the tension about 1/4 turn at a time. These are the two leading causes of knots hanging on the billhook. Knife arm travel could be because the knife arm roller is missing, if so replace the roller. The knife could be blunt and not severing the twine, either sharpen the knife or replace. It should be very sharp so a fine oil stone or the ...
